Two Payment Methods for One Customer

A customer holds one billing address and one payment method. Registering a second one replaces the first. No fallback payment method therefore takes over when a payment fails, and two subscriptions to be debited from two different payment methods need two customers, one per payment method.

The payment method is a property of the customer, not of the subscription. Every subscription of a customer is debited from the payment method registered on that customer, and registering a new card or a new IBAN overwrites the previous one — there is no second slot and no warning.

Replacing the payment method does not interrupt a payment already under way. An invoice whose payment is in progress is settled with the previous method, and the new one takes over for the debits that follow.

A payment operator adds a constraint of its own on top: an IBAN already registered against another customer is refused, and an IBAN shared by too many customers is refused as well. That check lives at the operator, which means it cannot be overridden from the ProAbono back office.

  1. Open Subscribers → + → New customer, and create the second customer with its own billing address.
  2. Save, then start the subscription concerned on that customer.
  3. Register the payment method on that customer, and leave the first customer’s payment method untouched.
  • The operator refuses the IBAN. An IBAN already attached to another customer, or reused across too many customers, is refused by the payment operator. Nothing in ProAbono lifts that refusal; the IBAN has to be freed at the operator, or another payment method used.
  • One payer for several customers. Where the point is not two payment methods but one payer covering several customers, duplicating customers is the wrong tool: a subscription can be paid by a buyer who is not its recipient, which keeps one payment method and one invoice stream for all of them.
